Univ.Prof.Dr.Dr.h.c. Herwig Kostron studierte und promovierte 1974 in Graz und wurde in Innsbruck, Boston
und an anderen Instituten in der Fachdisziplin Neurochirurgie ausgebildet und ist nun nach seiner
langjährigen Tätigkeit an der Univ. Klinik in Innsbruck, in seiner Privatpraxis als Wahlarzt tätig, welche seit
1984 besteht. Neben der Bandscheibenchirurgie im Lendenwirbel und Halswirbelbereich erlangte er
internationaler Ruf zur Behandlungen von Hirntumoren. Im Sinne der humanitären Hilfe wurde mit seiner
Hilfe die Neurochirurgie in Georgien aufgebaut, wo er 1 bis 2 Wochen pro Jahr unentgeltlich Operationen
durchführt.
Sein Operationskalender umfasst sämtliche Neurochirurgische Eingriffe. Über 12.000 Eingriffe an der
Wirbelsäule, über 2000 Eingriffe zur Hirntumorentfernung, Schmerzchirurgische Eingriffe bei
Trigeminusneuralgien, sowie Operationen an Gefäßmißbildungen.
Über 150 Publikationen in Fachzeitschriften und Fachbüchern.
Biography and Education
Herwig Kostron, Neurosurgeon at the Medical University of Innsbruck Austria, graduated from medical School in Graz, Austria in
1974. After 2 years of research at the Neuropharmacological Institute in Innsbruck, Austria, he finished his residency at the
Department for Neurosurgery in Innsbruck in 1982. He was the recipient of a Max Kade Research Grant in 1982-1983 at Mass.
General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. From 1984 till October 2012 he served as Neurosurgeon at the Medical
University Innsbruck. Since 1982 he is actively involved in the development and clinical translation of photodynamic diagnosis and
therapy. In 1985 photodynamic therapy was applied for the first time in patients suffering from glioblastoma multiforme and in
1998 fluorescence guided diagnosis was applied for the first time worldwide for intraoperative visualization of a malignant brain
tumor. The latter application has gained worldwide acceptance, whereas photodynamic therapy is still undergoing clinical trials.
His interest is to bring photodynamic application to a wide attention while stressing the medical and socio economical aspects. In
2011 he was elected to organize the 13th world conference of the International Photodynamic Association (IPA) and is the current
president of IPA.
Besides the oncological achievements, his interest is the treatment of spine problems of all kinds, including degenerative
diseases und disc herniation of the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine.
All conservative and surgical procedures are offered. While spine fusion is a modern concept in surgery, to maintain the
physiological movements is the main goal in doing surgery involving dynamic stabilization of the lumbar and cervical spine.
